WLPOA Volunteer and Board Opportunities

All WLPOA members are welcome to join our board or even just help out on one type of project or committee.  All positions are voluntary, but are structured to take only minimal time.  The more Windigo Lakes Area residents and friends that are involved, the more opinions and knowledge can be incorporated in representing our property owners with our Township and Sawyer County.  So, please consider joining us!

WLPOA Board positions are: 

President, Vice President, Treasurer, Membership Chair, Secretary, Communications Editor/Writer, Social Chair, Fishing and Wildlife Committee Chair, and Environmental and Safety Chair.

Other volunteer opportunities are:

Bay Captains, AIS monitoring, Water monitoring, Wildlife monitoring, emergency AIS eradication team, Committee members for Fishing and Wildlife and Environmental and Safety, and Plant Management.   You can also tell us how YOU may want to help. We are flexible and want to utilize any willing volunteers!

Here are job descriptions for various Board Positions.  Note that we sometimes combine some of these roles depending on time capacity and interests of our volunteers.

President

      • Set the time and place for board meetings
      • Conduct board and annual meetings
      • Help set yearly goals for committees and the association
      • Create an agenda for board and annual meetings
      • Keep informed of issues concerning the association
      • Make yourself available to members regard issues and concerns.
      • Contribute articles for the newsletter

Vice President

      • Preside over board meeting in absence of the President
      • Attend all board and committee meetings and work to improve status
      • Perform duties of any board member/committee head that are in absentia (fill in gaps as needed).
      • Be a liaison to other Lake Associations, County Lakes and Rivers Forums.
      • Be a liaison to Town, County, and State Governments
      • Be a portal of information and education to all Association members and surrounding community.

Treasurer

      • Maintain a record of inflow and outflow of WLPOA funds
      • Prepare a treasurer’s report and present it at meetings as requested by WLPOA leadership
      • Make deposits and prepare and mail out checks as directed
      • Manage a checking account and savings account at People’s Bank of
      • Wisconsin in Hayward.  Requires a signature card to be on file at the bank. (on-line banking may be used for convenience)    

Membership Chair

      • Send out a WLPOA membership renewal letter during the first quarter of each calendar year (include stamped return envelope).
      • Purchase office supplies as needed (stamps, paper, envelopes, labels ect.) and obtains reimbursement from Treasurer.
      • Collects membership renewal checks and gives them to the Treasurer for deposit.
      • Maintains a complete database of all landowners on Windigo, Hub, and Lake 27. (Use MS Excel). Updates mailing address, phone numbers, or email addresses as new information is provided; Updates data base record that indicates whether WLPOA membership has been paid for the current year. Generates list of “no pays” as requested.
      • Prints sets of mailing labels for Windigo Lake Newsletter as requested by the Newsletter Editor.
      • Collects any “undeliverable” newsletter from the Newsletter Editor and attempts to obtain a correct address (typically done using Sawyer County land records available on the internet).
      • Coordinates communication between the Windigo “bay captains” to the board.

Social Chair

      • Coordinate the annual meeting and picnic on the first Sunday in August: Arrange set up and clean up after the picnic; Send a meeting notice to the newsletter editor and coordinate reminder to be sent; Coordinate the menu; Coordinate the location along with the WLPOA President
      • Coordinate the spring dinner: Recommend a  time and date for the dinner to the WLPOA Board; Determine what type of dinner we should have; Make reservations if needed; Coordinate invitations well in advance to be sent by Communications Editor; Coordinate a reminder in the dues letter sent by Treasurer and/or separately by Communications Editor; Secure a speaker or entertainment if possible

Secretary

      • Take minutes at all board meetings
      • Take minutes a the annual meeting
      • Print and distribute minutes to all board members
      • Participate at board meetings
      • Arrange for someone to take the minutes if unable to attend the board meetings

Communications Editor/Writer

      • Compile and distribute Newsletters and Annual Meeting notice: November Newsletter (pdf emailed and hard copy mailed), March Newsletter (pdf emailed and hard copy mailed), June Newsletter emailed, June Postcard reminder about Annual Meeting
      • Update website: Post newsletter copies to Newsletter page, update  “Latest News Page” when newsletters are sent and for other pertinent updates, update Classifieds as appropriate, add Posts when pertinent news comes available, add pictures to photo album
      • Monitor the info email box:  Respond to contacts as appropriate; Collect and summarize volunteer AIS screening activities on Windigo. Send hours summary to Treasurer for his use in filing for expense reimbursement from the WLPOA grant with the DNR.

Fishing and Wildlife Committee Chair

      • Schedule at least one meeting per year
      • Work with the DNR to set goals for the lake and recommend action or inaction regarding DNR fish stocking
      • Find members to work on special projects
      • Coordinate a watch group to monitor the areas where the loons nest
      • If the lake is shocked get a report from the DNR
      • Committee Chair should provide beer for meetings. It helps membership
      • Contribute articles regarding fishing and wildlife for the newsletter

Environmental and Safety Committee Chair

      • Help preserve the unique characteristics of Lake Windigo.
      • Focus on conservations efforts relating to water quality, shoreline preservation maintaining high quality aquatic environment for fish and wild life.
      • Work with state, county and township to achieve these goals.
      • Monitor lake safety and safety concerns of the members.
      • Make members aware of the above by communicating thru our website, newsletter and/or bay captains.

Clean Boats Clean Water (CBCW) Volunteer

Assist the Lake Environment Board Member with managing the boat landing monitor, entering data into the DNR SWIMS database, assisting the Treasurer in administrating the annual CBCW grant.

Bay Captain

The major role of the Bay Captain is to facilitate communication between the WLPOA Board Members and the property owners in their assigned area (or zone). The Membership Chairperson will coordinate communication between the Board Members and the Bay Captains.  Bay Captains responsibilities include:

      • Meet all property owners within your assigned member’s to build   an informal network of WLPOA supporters.
      • Notify the Membership Chairperson of changes in the status of real property within your assigned area. An “information packer” will be provided to the Bay Captain to deliver to new neighbors.
      • Report any wildlife or water quality issues noted in your bay to the Membership Chairperson who will inform the Board Members.

Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Monitor 

Note that all friends and residents of the Windigo Lakes Area can search for Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) and submit hours spent searching to info@windigolake.org.  

We have volunteer AIS monitors who are searching for AIS in designated areas of the lake near their property.  The responsibilities of an AIS monitor are:

      • Monitor AIS in the designated perimeter of Windigo.  (See AIS monitoring page for specifics)
      • Report time spent to info@windigolake.org.  Report the name of the person doing the monitoring, precise or approximate date and the time spent.  It is optional to also report the section of the lake monitored. 
      • Report whether or not a boat was used in the AIS monitoring also to info@windigolake.org.
      • If any suspect AIS are found, notify the DNR Immediately.
